DIY MOURNERS KIT
Description:
A stone sculpture made with 5 broken pieces of Jerusalem stones of different sizes. Surrounding the sculpture are several smaller rocks of different sizes with the Parshat Hashavua and year written in black marker. The rocks are placed on a glass covered table with a collage of family photographs underneath the glass. There is a slight reflection on the glass and the pictures are an unclear mess of layers. Behind the table there is a backdrop of pale green floral tapestry of quilted diamond shapes with buttons made
from the same fabric.
The antique night table stands between two single beds.
Included:
3 large Jerusalem stones, various sizes
Smaller Jerusalem stones
Precious rocks and seashells from around the world
Glass sheet
Family photographs and drawings
Sharpie black marker
CD with mourners music.
Nine different voices of mourning from cultures around the world. Courtesy of the exhibition “Occupation of Loss” by Taryn Simon. Mix included.
Bonus: red balloon and ribbon ( helium not included).
Instructions:
Put photos and love letters under the glass. Feel free to use your own photos.
Create your own version of a memorial tombstone either for yourself or your loved one. Jerusalem stone is considered the number one choice for tombstones. It contains both holiness and a diverse history.
Write short messages you would like to remember or be remembered by on the rocks. The sculpture should suit your loved one’s personality. Place on your night table or any special place of your choice. Lie down in bed, play music.
Play recordings of your loved one. Let yourself remember
and mourn your loss. Allow as much time as needed.
Do not rush the process. Do as often as needed.
Keep adding messages on the rocks or rearranging the pictures under the glass.
Version 2:
Create for yourself your own tombstone. Lie down in bed. Play music that you love. Allow yourself to feel your own presence. Breathe. Imagine yourself leaving your loved ones. Write down messages on rocks for them to keep and remember you with love. Place memorable photographs and old letters under the glass to preserve your memory.
Do not hurt yourself. Remember this is only an experiment.
After your passing, refer loved ones to step number.
