There is a story of a Rabbi who had a limp. His bride complained of his disability. He told her to look in the mirror. She saw it was she that had the missing foot.

This story came to mind when I met my husband. He had a serious case of acne which continued for many years after we got married. When my two oldest daughters reached puberty I started praying that their skin should remain unblemished. Their skin remained clear. I stopped praying and worrying. Since then, all of the children have had bad cases of acne and it is I whom they blame for their scarring skin.

Now, since my husband's death, when I look in our bedroom mirror, I think of the story of the Rabbi and wonder if it wasn’t only the acne that he endured on my behalf.
